Have you ever heard your stylist tell you that you only need a quarter size of shampoo to get your hair clean? I’ll be the first to admit that I am guilty of over using hair products, especially shampoo. As someone with curly hair I like to make sure that it’s really clean and ready for the week.

But, as clean as it is after I overdo it with the shampoo, it also feels dry, brittle, and honestly looks very dull! It wasn’t until my dear stylist told me that I am very much doing it all wrong. I wish you could see my face when I realized not only was I using too much product, but I was also applying it incorrectly.

I mean, it's just shampoo!? There's no right or wrong way to apply it… right? Well, yes there is. And this goes for all hair types– not just for the curly girls.

The right way to shampoo your hair is by applying it to your scalp ONLY.

Yup, you read that right– only your scalp. If you put shampoo all over your scalp and strand you run the risk of drying out your hair (which is what was happening to me). The key here is to massage and scrub, eventually the shampoo will run down your strands cleansing them in the process. Crazy right? But thats how powerful shampoo can be, it will cleanse your strands as you rinse it out.

Depending on how dirty your hair is, you might need a couple of shampoo cycles to get your scalp clean. How can you tell? Your shampoo doesn’t lather initially. If this happens, don’t panic and grab some more. Continue scrubbing the scalp and rinse the shampoo out, then you can do another shampoo (hence the term “rinse and repeat”). However, only do this if your scalp is absolutely dirty, you don’t want to strip your hair of its natural oils!

Now, on to the conditioner.

Surprisingly, this is one product I wasn’t using enough of ! Believe it or not, conditioner has mild cleansing properties, which is why you shouldn’t put shampoo all over your strands. After you apply your conditioner, let it sit for about 5-10 minutes. This is the perfect time to detangle your hair! After its time to rinse out NEVER use hot water! It should always lukewarm (or cold if you can handle it).

The more we can protect our hair from damage, the better. It’s important that we wash our hair correctly to get rid of dirt and build up from all of the products we use, but we also need to keep in mind that we still need a balance of healthy oils (I know I do, thats for sure).

And if you feel like your hair is all dried out from over shampooing… Don't worry— we’ve got you covered. Our line has a variety of products packed with hydrating ingredients to restore the shine and moisture to your gorgeous mane!
