If you’re like me you immediately furrowed your brow in confusion – How could this be?
So I consulted our experts here at tryBello HQ and asked them for myself hoping that it wasn't the case and that my precious hair would be safe from becoming older…
It turns out, much to my dismay, that it’s true.
Luckily enough, it’s not actually aging on its own. It’s rapidly aging due to oxidative stress, something we can’t completely avoid.
Let me explain.
Even though we have hair to help cover it up, our scalp is still extremely sensitive. So factors like poor air quality, metals found in water, UV rays, and even preservatives can wreak havoc on our scalps’ microbiome.
Why? They deposit molecules called free radicals.
Free radicals are basically highly unstable molecules that will destroy anything and everything in their way (think of it as a wrecking ball gone rogue).
Basically, free radicals trigger the hair cells to undergo accelerated aging, which then leads to cell death.
As you can imagine, this causes a slew of problems, including hair loss, thinning hair, and a decline in texture and shine.
Fun fact: Oxidative stress can also cause premature graying because it also damages the natural melanin pigment of our hair.
So is there any way to fight this? Fortunately, yes!
The downside is that as amazing as our bodies are… It's hard to fight free radicals alone.
The most important part is making sure you have a diet full of antioxidants to fight free radicals.
As well as trying to avoid products with harsh ingredients, factors like air quality and UV rays are out of our control, so the more we minimize exposure to these stressors the better.
